St. Barnabas ministries extend far beyond our congregation in Cary, IL, reaching into the community, throughout the nation and around the world. This is possible because of our many partners.
Locally, the congregation maintains close ties to the Cary Grove Food Pantry as well as the Northern Illinois Food Bank (which provides Mobile Markets as well as supplying food programs), and the St. Barnabas Christian Preschool. This includes financial support as well as providing board members, volunteers, and other leadership. We also support PADS, including an ongoing collection of necessities for their clients, and we continually collect eyeglasses that are taken to Central America. A recent “Stuff the Turkey” project provided Thanksgiving dinner for the residents at Lutheran Social Services of Illinois‘ Gable Point Senior Housing in Crystal Lake, and each Christmas we provide gifts to select local families in need. Each year, our Confirmation classes are involved in local mission projects of their choosing.
The congregation has long hosted several Boy Scout and Girl Scout groups and currently sponsors Boy Scout Troop 657. We also serve as a host site for weekly district meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, and our building is available for use by other community groups, as well. Lastly, we serve as a polling place for Algonquin Township Precincts 23, 48 and 55.
We participate in regular informal gatherings with other pastors from the Cary-Grove area to discuss community needs and ways we might cooperate in serving the southeast McHenry County area.
Our high school Youth Group participates in annual mission trips, building relationships and serving communities in need around the country. Recent destinations have included Benton Harbor, MI, Taylorsville, NC, Minneapolis, Toronto, and several American Indian Reservations in the West. More recently in the Midwest, we have supported storm-ravaged communities of Washington, IL and Joplin, MO. Further national reach is provided through our partners in Lutheran service.
Globally, we support the ELCA’s Global Barnyard, Malaria Campaign, World Hunger Appeal, and Lutheran Disaster Response. We have sent school supply kits to Lutheran World Relief and we support them financially, as well. We provide the ELCA Good Gifts catalog that lists all kinds of ways to provide gifts around the world, large or small.
Lastly, St. Barnabas provides support to missionaries Pastor Jim and Carol Sack, in Japan.
