Call to Worship

For fathers everywhere, who have given us life and love, that we may show them respect and love.

People of God: Holy God, hear this prayer for our fathers.

For fathers who have lost a child through death, that their faith may give them hope, and their family and friends support and console them

People of God: Holy God, hear this prayer for our fathers who mourn.

For men who may not have children of their own but who act like a father to someone in need of advice, support, nurturing, and love.

People of God: Holy God, hear this prayer for our father figures.

For stepfathers who have assumed that role with love and joy, who have loved the children of others as their own and created a new family.

People of God: Holy God, hear this prayer for stepfathers.

For adoptive fathers, who have heard the call of God to lovingly step forward for those who need their care.

People of God: Holy God, hear this prayer for adoptive fathers.

For fathers who have been unable to be a source of strength, who have not responded to the needs of their children, and have not sustained their families.

People of God: Holy God, have mercy on absentee fathers.

For fathers who struggle with temptation, violence, or addiction. For those who do harm, and for those whom they have harmed.

People of God: Holy God, have mercy on fathers who struggle.

For new fathers, full of hope. For long-time fathers, full of wisdom. For fathers yet to be and fathers soon to be.

People of God: Holy God, hear our prayer for the fathers of your church.

For those who have shaped our lives without claim of family or kinship. For those who have taught us, guided us, shaped us, and molded us into servants of Christ our Lord.

People of God: Holy God, hear our prayer for the fathers of our faith.

God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all that is. Bless fathers of all kinds, that they may be strengthened in that role and in their faith. Let the example of their gentleness and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Jesus Christ our Lord. People of God: Amen

Confession and Forgiveness based on Psalm 51

The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit, a broken heart filled with regret and remorse. This heart God will not despise. We are a broken people. Trusting in God’s mending ways, let us confess our sins before God and one another:

Silence for reflection

Let us pray. Have mercy on us, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy, blot out our transgressions.

People of God: Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity and cleanse us from our sin. For we know our transgressions, and our sin is ever before us.

Against you, you alone, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment.

People of God: Indeed, we were born guilty, sinners when our mothers conceived us. You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach us wisdom in our secret hearts.

Purge us with hyssop, and we shall be clean; wash us, and we shall be whiter than snow. Let us hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from our sins, and blot out all our iniquities.

People of God: Create in us a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within us. Do not cast us away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation, and sustain in us a willing spirit.

O Lord, open our lips, and our mouths will declare your praise. The Lord creates in us clean hearts; God puts new and right spirits within us. We are not cast away from the presence of the Holy One, and the Holy Spirit is not taken from us. In Christ, we are restored to the joy of God’s salvation; and by God’s grace, our spirits are remade to follow God’s will.

People of God: Thanks be to God!

Assisting Minister: Let us pray. Holy God, you lift us out of the pit when we fall, and you are always faithful. Thank you for turning our mourning into dancing and for clothing us in your joy. Give us voices to sing your praises and eyes to see your goodness. People of God: Amen

Reading

Psalm 30

Assisting Minister: I will extol you, O LORD, for you have drawn me up, and did not let my foes rejoice over me. O LORD my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. O LORD, you brought up my soul from Sheol, restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit. Sing praises to the LORD, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment; his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. As for me, I said in my prosperity, “I shall never be moved.” By your favor, O LORD, you had established me as a strong mountain; you hid your face; I was dismayed. To you, O LORD, I cried, and to the LORD I made supplication: “What profit is there in my death, if I go down to the Pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it tell of your faithfulness? Hear, O LORD, and be gracious to me! O LORD, be my helper!” You have turned my mourning into dancing; you have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, so that my soul may praise you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you forever. The word of the Lord. People of God: Thanks be to God

Prayers of the People

Assisting Minister: Trusting in God’s abundant mercy, let us offer our prayers for a world in need.

A brief silence.

Assisting Minister: For the church here and around the world, we pray. Seek out disciples and send them out with authority to proclaim good news, bring healing where there is pain, and counter the forces of evil. God, in your mercy, People of God: hear our prayer.

Assisting Minister: For the earth and all its creatures, we pray. Equip farmers, farm workers, and all who labor on the land to produce a harvest. Nourish crops with ample rainfall and abundant sunshine. Restore lands ruined by pollution or misuse. God, in your mercy, People of God: hear our prayer.

Assisting Minister: For those who govern, we pray. Empower those who seek peaceful solutions to conflict and embolden those who advocate for all who are oppressed. Work through systems of government to establish justice throughout the world. God, in your mercy, People of God: hear our prayer.

Assisting Minister: For those who suffer, we pray. Accompany those who feel helpless, alone, or abandoned. Embrace all who long for successful treatment for mental illness or freedom from addiction. Heal those who are sick, especially Frank, Peggy, Rori, Tricia’s family, Susan, Grace, Alice, Gus, Faith, Denise, Leslie, Norma, Brian, Scott, Jessica, Jeanne, Barb, Cecil, Stan, Marlene, Ryleigh, Dylan, Sandy, Hopie, the Bredemus family, Allen, Bunny, the Vogt family, Patricia, Michael, Nicholas and his family, Beth, Betty, Tom, Kara, and those we name silently or aloud. God, in your mercy, People of God: hear our prayer.

Assisting Minister: For a well-run and well-attended annual meeting last Sunday, we give you thanks. Thank you for committed and faithful members and leaders. Thank you for dad jokes and Jell-O buffets and those willing to step up and serve on council and the nominating team: Denise, Joe, Marianne, Mike, and Ricky. Thank you for those who served so willingly: Janet, Jeff, Seth, and Scott. Thank you for those who helped update our constitution and approve it. Thank you, faithful God, that we can be your faithful people. God, in your mercy, People of God: hear our prayer.

Please offer your own prayers of joy or concern, ending with “God, in your mercy,”

We respond with “hear our prayer.”

Assisting Minister: For all the saints, we give thanks. Receive into your eternal care all those who have died and fill us with hope that does not disappoint. God, in your mercy, People of God: hear our prayer.

Receive our prayers and answer us, O God, in the name of Jesus Christ. People of God: Amen

Children’s Sermon         Mike Parmele

The Peace (Please share peace by waving or showing the peace sign.)
The peace of Christ be with you always. People of God: And also with you.

Offering
Let us pray. God of field and forest, sea and sky, you are the giver of all good things. Sustain us with these gifts of your creation, and multiply your graciousness in us, that the world may be fed with your love, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. People of God: Amen

Communion
The Lord be with you.
People of God: And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
People of God: We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People of God: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

And now let us pray with confidence in the words that Jesus taught us:

People of God: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Invitation to Communion

Assisting Minister: All people are called to Christ’s table. Come, eat what is good.

For our at-home worshippers, you may take communion using these words:

The body of Christ, given for you.

The blood of Christ, shed for you.
